Firefighter’s Farewell

On 5 April 2008 the Tamahere Icepack Coolstore unexpectedly burst into flames. The fire, considered as one of the largest industrial fires in the country, caused injuries to seven firefighters, and took the life of one … SSO Derek Lovell. He died on the night he was supposed to celebrate 25 years on the job.

On 11 April, his comrades at the Hamilton Fire Station organised a funeral procession to honour their fallen colleague. Firemen from all over the Waikato attended, and SSO Lovell was farewelled not just by his friends and co-workers, but by a lot of grateful civilians who took time off to attend the ceremony.

I was still based in Hamilton during that time, and took photos of the event which was held during my lunch break, see below.

More photos of the event (sent in by other contributors) can be found here.

That's not exactly a flattering image. Eh! Anyway, when I'm not taking photos, I do acrylic painting or write about my adventures (and misadventures) in this wonderful journey called life. :)
